Frequently Asked Questions
THIS SECTION IS INTENDED TO PROVIDE A GENERAL RESPONSE TO SOME OF THE MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS. IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION NOT SHOWN BELOW OR WOULD LIKE ADDITIONAL CLARIFICATION ON ANY OF THE RESPONSES BELOW, PLEASE LET US KNOW.
Question: How are team rosters created?
Answer: Rosters are created randomly. As players are registered, either through the online system or manually, the players are put into player pools by age group. The Board then randomly places players onto team rosters. The rosters are reviewed by the Board and any necessary changes, such as placing coach's children on the appropriate roster, are manually made.
Question: Can I request a particular coach for my child?
Answer: No. UCYS will randomly create rosters and will not accept requests for players to be put on a particular coach's roster. Once placed on a roster, players must play on that team.
Question: Can I request my child be placed on the same team as one of their friends?
Answer: No. UCYS will randomly create rosters and will not accept requests for players to be put on the same roster as other players. Once placed on a roster, players must play on that team.
Question: Do siblings get placed on the same team?
Answer: Yes. Siblings will be placed on the same team as long as they are within the same age group.
Question: Can I request my child be moved up to an older age division?
Answer: Yes. Players may either play in the assigned age group or request to be moved up one age group. For example, a player who is designated to be placed in the U8 division per the WVSA age matrix can play in the U8 age group or can request to be placed into the U10 age group. However, players may never go down an age division.
Question: Will the registration fees be refunded if my child doesn't play?
Answer: Possibly. Please refer to the Refund Policy section of the UCYS Policies and Proceduers Manual for situations where a refund may be considered by the Board of Directors.
Question: When are practices held?
Answer: Practice dates and times are determined by the coach based on the availability of the practice fields.
Question: Is there travel required for games?
Answer: Travel for out of town games typically begins in the U10 age group and continues through U14. The games for the younger age groups (U4, U5, U6 and U8) are all held at the soccer fields at the Upshur County Wellness Complex located behind the US National Guard Armory on Brushy Fork Road.
Question: Will my child receive a trophy?
Answer: Not from UCYS. If the coach or team parents wish to purchase trophies on their own to distribute to the team, they may do so.
Question: Is there a league sponsored end of year activity?
Answer: UCYS has typically endeavored to sponsor an end of year activity for all of the players in the league. However, an end of year activity is not guaranteed. If coaches or team parents wish to hold individual end of year activities for their team, they may do so.
Question: Are players required to attend every practice?
Answer: Players are not required to attend every practice in order to participate in the league. However, UCYS strongly encourages players to attend all practices and games for their own benefit and continued development.
Question: My child is new to soccer. Is it okay to register them?
Answer: Any child, regardless of age or skill level, is strongly encouraged to play recreational soccer in our league. The primary focus of the league is to encourage a love of the game of soccer in youth regardless of skill level.
